Various types of bicycle car racks

Currently, there are various types of bicycle car racks on the market. You can select one based on type, manufacturer, model or year.

Some people prefer to mount their bikes on the roofs of their vehicles. Others may prefer to hitch them to the rear end of their vehicles. So, when it comes to mounting, there are two key types, the rear-mounted and roof-mounted types. If you happen to have a specialty bike like a recumbent, then, the roof-mounted type might be suitable.

The rear-mounted type can be subdivided into the trunk-mounted and hitch-mounted types. The former is usually hitched to the truck of the vehicle while the latter is usually hitched to the rear end of the vehicle. There are advantages and disadvantages of selecting either type of bicycle carrier. It depends on your preference and budget.

Normally, the trunk-mounted type is of lower cost than the hitch-mounted type. Other than being easy to use, carrying it around is very easy as well. But, installing and removing the hitch-mounted type is easier and quicker, making it suitable for frequent journeys. If your vehicle happens to have a spare tire, then, do not worry. You can use a spare-tire bicycle carrier, which can be attached properly to a vehicle's spare tire.
