In 1758, Benjamin Franklin found a method to cool an object speedily by using the principles of evaporation. Then came the method of vapor compression in refrigeration and it was Michale Faraday who used liquefied Ammonia in refrigeration in 1820. During the twentieth century ammonia refrigeration systems using water-ammonia became very popular and is widely used in large industrial areas. Initially ammonia refrigeration is used where it is served in much larger capacity like Food Processing Units, beverage and petro-chemical fields as Industrial Refrigeration. But at present, small scale buildings such as college campuses, large office buildings and commercial public stores use air-conditioning facility that use ammonia refrigeration systems.
Ammonia can be easily liquefied by compression or cooling. And when it is in gaseous state, its capacity of heat absorption is very great. It can be used as large as in 1500hp in a single compressor motor. Also it can withstand wide range of temperatures from 50F to 70 F. Its strong pungent odor can be easily recognized when there is a leak. When released in the air, it does not pollute the atmosphere. When mixed with water, it becomes a nitrogen-rich fertilizer quickly absorbed by the earth. And ammonia is less expensive compared with other refrigerants. And hence Ammonia Refrigeration Systems play an important role in the field of industrial refrigeration.
