The Interviewer

The company I work for has a really bad habit of putting people into positions briefly when they don't really have the experience. Last month I ended up having to be the interviewer for the new rotating laser level technician position. Although they were going to listen to the taped interview later, my managers wanted me to ask this guy a bunch of questions and gauge his responses. But what they didn't seem to understand was that I didn't really know how to gauge these kinds of responses, because I didn't really know anything about this position. But nevertheless, I had to spend an hour listening to this guy drone on and on about rotary laser levels and their varying degrees of importance.

But what I learned during this interview was that I was picking up a great deal. The guy was very articulate and I knew a little bit about the position of course because I work in the industry, but as this guy spoke all of the terms and technical data seemed to take on a new and lively air about them. After meeting with him I felt quite confident in my ability to explain what a rotary laser was to anyone who would've been willing to listen.
